Lizzie Carr

Activist, Author, Founder, Plastic Patrol

Triple world record holder, Lizzie Carr, is an activist, adventurer and acclaimed author. After a cancer diagnosis at 26, Lizzie took up paddle boarding to aid recovery. In 2015 she quit her job and dedicated her time to campaigning. In just three years, Lizzie completed three world firsts on a paddle board, catapulting her one-woman crusade against plastic pollution, into a globally recognised movement, ‘Plastic Patrol’.

Plastic Patrol mobilises volunteers on the ground to either join activity led clean ups or to do them independently. Clean ups are combined with free wellbeing activities like paddle boarding, canoeing, kayaking, yoga and plogging, encouraging people to look after the planet whilst simultaneously looking after themselves. To date, more than 15,000 volunteers spanning 80 countries worldwide have taken part, collecting and recording nearly 300,000 pieces of data to create an important evidence base.

Disrupting policy and changing the agenda through scientific research. This year Lizzie will present to Government the first phase of a five-year study into plastic pollution, calling for law change around single use plastic.

In 2019, Lizzie was named in the top 10 ‘female climate activists to follow on Instagram’ by Stylist, Marie Claire and Glamour magazine. This year, she is shortlisted for Stylist’s Remarkable Women Awards 2020 in the reader nominated 'Inspiration of the Year category'. Winners to be announced 10th March.

Lizzie has written for publications including the United Nations, The Telegraph, The Guardian, BASE and Oceanographic magazines. Her debut book, Paddling Britain, was released in October 2018.
